A guide to some of Copenhagen’s best coffee shop from Eric and Lisa, the bloggers behind Penguin & Pia.

Ah yes, Copenhagen. This magical city is known for its Scandinavian vibes, colourful harbour, and “little mermaid” statue, and truly has something for everyone. It’s easy to see why the Danish capital city attracts so many yearly visitors.

And, when visitors need a break from all of the action, they head to cafes. Many consider Scandinavian cafe culture to be second to none. Often, it seems like you can’t round a corner in some neighbourhoods without finding a new spot to try! That’s why we’ve set out to highlight just a handful of our favourite cafes and coffee shops in the city. Ready to get caffeinated? Give these Copenhagen coffee spots a try!

The Coffee Collective

The Coffee Collective has a very typical Scandinavian interior that’s minimal and stylish. This cafe is well-known among coffee lovers in the Danish capital as a great place for meeting a friend to catch up and enjoy a hot beverage. The Collective prides itself on using high-quality beans that are sourced directly from farmers and roasted in Denmark. You can even buy these beans in the shop — they make a great souvenir for the coffee lover in your life!

They have three locations across Copenhagen, one of which is a stall in Torvehallerne. Since they offer so many varieties of coffees, it’s best to be a little adventurous and try something different each time. You can even try their coffee beers and coffee cocktails (available at some locations).

Ipsen & Co.

This small coffee shop on Gammel Kongevej feels very cozy inside. Since Ipsen & Co. is quite small, and a favorite among the locals, you might need a bit of luck as it can sometimes be difficult to get a seat.

In the spring and summer, it’s a great place to sit outside, enjoy a coffee in the sunshine, and watch the bicycles pass by on their way to and from the city centre. Ipsen & Co. also has a delicious breakfast — and you can get a typical Danish breakfast with rye bread. Friendly Local Tip: Their Cappuccino is very, very good!

The Laundromat Cafe

The Laundromat Cafe is a unique place… to say the least! Their goal for the cafe was to combine laundry and socializing in a comfortable surrounding. We think they have succeeded! While there are different locations across the world, and three laundromat cafes in Copenhagen. The one we mention is close to Ipsen & Co.

Besides getting a great coffee, you can actually do your laundry there if you need, too. They have a variety of games and newspapers, so it is the perfect place to meet with friends, play some games, or just read a book in a great atmosphere. The Laundromat Cafe also has lots of tasty food options like sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast — all served until 4pm. Tip: The snack board comes with dried ham, hummus, cheese, and other items —making it perfect for sharing.

Mad & Kaffe

Here’s a fun opening fact about Mad & Kaffe: it won a prize as Copenhagen’s best cafe in 2015. Since it’s very popular, be sure to get there early if you need a table. It’s an amazing place for brunch.

So, why is Mad & Kaffe so good? They allow you to create your own brunch by mixing and matching menu items. The prices simply changes based on how many items you choose! The food is absolutely delicious and very Instagrammable (if you’re into that kind of thing). The menu includes items like salmon, avocado with chili oil, bacon, different styles of eggs, yogurt with muesli, and different kinds of baked goods. Of course, they offer a great variety of coffee, tea and juice.

If the weather is nice in Copenhagen, you can sit outside and enjoy the sun. Consider stopping by later during the day for a coffee and a smørrebrød (the famous Danish open faced sandwich on rye bread).

Grød

With four locations all over the city, Grød is well-known for their delicious porridge. There is one location in the Torvehallerne food market, and another location that is very close to Copenhagen Business School (that’s the one for which we included the address). This makes it the perfect place for a hearty breakfast and morning coffee. If you can’t make it for breakfast, don’t worry — you can order porridge until 5 pm!

Grød offers many different kinds, from oat porridge to chia porridge, and even a gluten-free option if you’re gluten intolerant. The excitement continues when you get to choose your toppings! They have lots of different options such as fresh fruit, almonds, cocoa nibs, peanut butter, chia seeds, and many more.

For lunch and dinner, you can also order different kinds of food such as risotto or daal. Honestly, we recommend going to Grød even if you’re not a huge porridge fan — lots of people have been converted after eating there!

Paludan Bog & Cafe

The cafe’s goal was to combine a traditional bookstore with a coffee shop/eatery. We like to think that it worked out really well- it’s an absolute favourite among locals and tourists alike! The walls are covered in books, which gives the cafe a really cool vibe. You can also bring your own book or borrow one from the cafe— there’s even a book shop in the basement.

The cafe is placed in the centre of Copenhagen, making it great option if you’re checking out Copenhagen attractions such as the Botanic Gardens, Rosenborg Castle, or the Rundetårn.

Overall, it’s a great suggestion for any meal of the day. All the food we have tried so far has been delicious to the point where we ate too much. Compared to some other places in the city, the cafe is a more affordable option (for Copenhagen) — especially considering the portion sizes are that big.

Espresso Huset

Not to be confused with “Espresso House” which is also a coffee shop in the city, Espresso Huset has great coffee and really good sandwiches.

The cafe is very close to Christiansborg Palace and filled with comfortable, retro-style couches which makes you feel really cozy the moment you walk in.

It’s a great place to come if you want to enjoy a good coffee and admire some latte art, which the staff does incredibly well. Since there’s also lots of space and it’s usually pretty quiet, Espresso Huset is a fantastic place to get some work done!

Bastard Café

Bastard Café is not called the “board game cafe” for no reason. Here, you’ll find a “small” selection of a few hundred different board games which you can enjoy with friends. It’s no wonder that it’s so popular among locals and tourists.

You can either come here in the afternoon to enjoy a coffee and snack, or come later in the day for a beer and pub food. There are comfortable retro couches that make the space a great place to relax. It’s also not too far from Espresso Huset—making it very accessible from the centre of Copenhagen.

Bertels Salon

If you are a cake fan, you HAVE to go here. Bertels Salon is known for its delicious cheesecake — and we absolutely understand why! Some visitors have even gone so far as to say Bertels has the best cheesecake in Copenhagen.

They offer lots of different types of cake, from strawberry to lemon meringue to Oreo. Just walking by the cafe and seeing all the cakes in the window will make your mouth water.

Inside the cafe, there’s a great two-storey seating area. If you come at a very busy time (such as in the afternoon on weekends), you might have to wait a few minutes until you get a seat. Overall, Bertels is the perfect place if you want to enjoy coffee and cake in a very nice atmosphere.
